Art: Difficult Pleasure • by Theresa Martin

Art is essential. It’s right there in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs pyramid under self-actualization.

Art brings essential beauty and interest into my life. It’s not just in the making of art, but in the observing of what others make. Australian artist Bret Whitely called making art “difficult pleasure” and I can’t think of two better words to describe how it feels to make art. It is not difficult pleasure, however, to look at art. It is essential.

You are so right that it is essential...even for those of us who can not make art; we still love to observe and to hear about the process that others use to create the pleasure for us.

Congrats Theresa.
