A Diamond in the Rough • by Lovey (Lavette Johnson-Debrow)
Unpolished Artist
When I started my journey down this path of vintage photos and fabrics I was so unpolished. It was new to me. So many people were already making collages. Where would I fit in this crowd of talented artists? Would I fit in at all? What would make Me and Mine stand out from so many others? What would my true beauty look like? I had so many questions that needed answers, and so began my inward search into my heart for art.
My Vision Became Clear
I started seeing my vision manifest itself in the images I chose, the fabrics that called out to me, and the old pieces of broken jewelry that needed a new story written for their use. “Fabric Photos Memories by Lovey,” images of vintage African-American women encased in beautifully textured fabrics, laces and trims with a touch of old broken jewelry ... yes, that's it! My vision is clear.
Sweet Melodies
Once my vision became clear, I had direction. I understood what made my heart soar and what sang sweet melodies to it. Creating fabric photo collages in this way captures my heart for art and makes it tangible in what I produce. My hands, my heart, my art formed from a thought into a manifestation of my perception of beauty. Ahh ... the melodies are sweet.
My Life Repurposed
So as I continue down this path of becoming a Polished Diamond amongst so many, I have learned my style and my eye for beauty has evolved. I know what I want to create, which materials to use, what images to select. It’s no longer, “Why am I doing this?” but rather, “How can I not?” My life has taken on new meaning, and it has been repurposed to include my art — not as a hobby but as a part of who I am as a fiber artist. Art continues to save my life and give it new meaning day by day.
My Heart for Art Exposed
I have now had the wonderful opportunity to be published in two magazines this year: Cloth Paper Scissors STUDIOS Summer 2010 Edition, and Sew Somerset Winter 2011 Edition, due in stores December 1. I have been featured on several blogs, met wonderful artists, and have been completely inspired by your words of support and encouragement as a new artist amongst so many others. Tears overflow as I look at My Heart (Words), My Art, My Vision forever captured ... and exposed for all to see.
Happy Birthday Mom
Happy Birthday Mom! Having this amazing opportunity to be a Guest Curator for CRESCENDOh is truly one of those added blessings that really touches the heart. December 20th would have been my mom’s 64th birthday. My mother passed away from pancreatic cancer on February 25, 2006. To be one of the featured Guest Curators on the day and week of her birthday is priceless and will forever be one of those memories that play a melodic song in my heart. Does Art Save Lives? Oh it most definitely does, in more ways than one!
Thank you all for believing in me and sharing my story.

Lovey's work is so beautiful and inspiring--each piece speaks to the heart as she takes us on a journey through history with her fabric art that is completely exquisite...Fabric, lace, and vintage jewelry come together to "dance" in her hands and the outcome is purely magical. Happy Birthday to Lovey's mom who has passed on but continues to inspire her daily.

Dear Lovey....Your story touches my heart and rings ever so true to mine as well! If we (you & I) just listen to that still small voice, as it rings out very loud and clear, how can we NOT make art? It is a talent God has instilled in each and every artist, and indeed you are one who has been blessed =) Your fabric art is beautiful, and touches the lives of all who see it! I am so proud for you, and if your beautiful Mother was here today, I am sure she would be saying the very same thing ♥

You have always been a diamond in my eyes Lovey. I cherish the little collage of mine that was created by your own hands and heart. I have where I can see every single day. So of course, I think of you every time I look at it.
I loved reading about the journey. You have inspired me to try new things myself.
love you...
