Hop Skip Jump :: Mixing it Up
So you know that I've been jumping rope for a while now. The thing I love about it is that there are an infinite number of ways to mix it up. And it's an easy way to add crosstraining to what you do ... because right now, I kickbox pretty much every day, which I love. But sometimes, when I feel like I'm hitting a wall with the boxing, my trusty rope comes out.
You can just do plain up and down jumps and push yourself in terms of how long you do it for.
You can do high-knees, butt-kickers, short sprints ...
And consecutive double-unders. This by far is the most challenging for me. I've been able to do 3 consecutively, as long as I remind myself important jump rope training advice: to stand up straight ... like a pencil ... which feels sort of counter-intuitive because it feels like you want to hunch your body down to do them, but nope ... you gotta stand straight and jump high up while the wrists quickly turn the rope twice under while you're in the air.
If you're looking for ways to mix up the jumping and skipping, check out this AWESOME video. Lots of ideas to add to the mix.

Can you tell us how to measure for the right fit of a jumprope? How long should it be?

Hi Deb. I usually stand on the rope (right in the middle) with one foot and pull the handles up close to my body. When the handles come up to the top of my ribcage, that's about the right length for me. Not too long and not too short. Good luck!
