I started this work as a demo painting while I was teaching in Portland. I finished it today. As I was looking into the soul of this persona coming forth, I had this impulse to paint the word "doubt" onto her forehead and I let that impulse happen. It's such a disliked word. I love the word because it usually reflects critical thinking. And as Christian thinker and writer Frederick Buechner says so well:
"Whether your faith is that there is a God or that there is not a God, if you don't have any doubts, you are either kidding yourself or asleep ... If there's no room for doubt, there's no room for me."
There is a 2008 film titled DOUBT with Meryl Streep and Amy Adams and Philip Seymour Hoffman which tackles these topics so well. It's worth a watch if you have the time.
