I referenced a portrait that I painted previously for this work by first free motion stitching with a sewing machine (without any pre-drawn marks), then adding watercolors, then adding hand embroidered stitches. Basting stitches keep excess fabric pulled to the back side of the work, which can be unbasted and the entire work released from the hoop if desired. "Nolite te bastardes carborundorum" is a Latin-derivative term from The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, which loosely translates to "Don't let the bastards grind you down."
