This is my demo painting from today's private painting session that I taught. I referenced a photo of a female model from a fashion book. The reference photo was intriguing to begin with because I felt the subject's gender looked fluid ... female in certain ways, male in other ways ... throughout the day, I saw that with certain strokes, the subject took on a female energy and with other strokes, a male energy.

I read a passage yesterday by Claudia Mesch regarding the history of gay identity art and how work by artists such as Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and others started to put forth through art, queer identity that had been too unworthy or too dangerous in conventional art to pursue ... and that the pursuit of such work by such artists has been to resist against not only patriarchy but against heteronormativity as it has been traditionally practiced within the medium of painting.

Heteronormativity. What a concept. It makes me ponder ... my life as a painter ... what I normalize, what I resist, what I dare champion as beautiful, to contradict convention.

So this work ... I am happy with the gender fluidity that it exudes ... and the boundaries regarding sexuality and gender that it pushes. After all ... we are all born naked and the rest is drag. #rupaul
