WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
The workshop combines superhero and comic book art with traditional and classical painting techniques. It’s a fun way to master the art of painting while having fun. We will learn some simple ways to break down and recreate almost any image that you can use over and over again.

Students will create an underpainting, work with color theory while mixing colors and achieving the “drama” of comics though composition and traditional techniques. We will be working with comic art but the same theories can be applied to any painting. Whether you are painting comics, flowers, portraits, or landscapes, you can use the same techniques to get better and better. We will explore concepts that are good for the beginner or the experienced painter.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Recreating your favorite characters
  • Learning fundamentals of painting
  • Step by step guidance from beginning of the painting to the finishing touches
  • Learning techniques to create paintings at home
  • Combining classical techniques w/ modern subjects
  • Exploration into color theory, painting techniques, composition, materials and etc.
  • Steps to developing your voice and style as an artist

DAY ONE
We will begin by viewing some examples of different covers and artist techniques and discuss how these will influence what we paint. Next, we will do a 4-step process to complete day-one’s painting. I will have 4 paintings on hand that outline the process we are going to use. I demo the first step, then the class begins. Once everyone has caught up, we begin the second step together.

I would take time as the students get caught up in each phase to review their progress, help them make adjustments and give additional guidance for next steps. We would get as far as we can for the day and plan to do some touchup as well as what I call "bells and whistles" on day 2.

DAY TWO
We spend 45 minutes touching up yesterday’s piece, adding some details and fun stuff. We begin a new painting that has a slightly advanced technique but builds off of yesterday’s technique. Day Two's techniques are focused more on expressive styles, manipulating the paint, mixing color, creative uses of the brushes and other materials.

Demo will be per stage, one phase at a time, creating more time for one on one’s with the students. Students will be given goals for their specific technique and skill level. At end of workshop, each student with get a hand-out of techniques and exercises they can do at home.
