WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
Explore abstraction through watercolor, composition, and color in this fun and intensive two-day workshop. You will learn basic watercolor techniques, color theory, and approaches to abstraction. This class is great for beginners new to watercolor, for artists new to abstraction, or for seasoned artists wanting to rejuvenate and refresh their practice.
DAY ONE
Watercolor fundamentals, techniques, and color: washes, gradients, wet-into-wet, glazing, drybrush, edge control, glazing. Practice techniques to gain more control. Explore color theory, color schemes, and using color to create harmony and contrast. Investigate color mixing, and the relationship between value and color. Create a composition using a methodical approach to both composition and color.
DAY TWO
Abstraction – Build on day one by exploring various approaches to abstraction, loosening up, finding your marks, painting from your imagination, and constructing a painting through improvisation. Watch live painting demonstrations and apply technique and color lessons to more fully developed compositions.
- Arrive & Settle: 9:00 :: Time for students to arrive, settle in.
- Class Segment A: 9:30-12:00 :: Class time with Erin who will demonstrate and guide the 1st part of class.
- Lunch & Stroll: 12:00 PM :: You can choose to brown bag it or take a stroll to one of the many hip and artsy eateries in the historic Artist's Village in Santa Ana, like C4 Deli, Chapter One4th Street Market, Cafe Calacas, and The Gypsy Den.
- Class Segment B: 1:30-4:30 PM :: Class time with Erin who will guide the 2nd part of class.
- Clean-Up & Depart: 4:30-5:00 PM

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Erin McIntosh is best known for her process-driven, colorful abstractions that explore a range of organic and geometric forms. McIntosh has exhibited throughout the southeastern U.S. including Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and The Museum of Arts and Sciences in Macon, GA. Her paintings have been published in New American Paintings and in Create Magazine. She currently is Assistant Professor at the University of North Georgia and has taught for The University of Georgia’s Study Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy. She holds two B.F.A.s and an M.F.A. in Studio Art from The University of Georgia. McIntosh’s paintings are represented by Gregg Irby Gallery in Atlanta, GA. She lives and works in Athens, GA.
