A Recap of Jennifer Mercede's Workshop!

Thought I'd share some photos and a synopsis of all the fun that was had these past two days with Jennifer Mercede in Studio CRESCENDOh.

It was a packed house as we started the first day with lots of blind contour drawings ...

And then we segued into doodling and then painting ... drawing, doodling, painting, drawing, doodling, painting, drawing, doodling, painting ...

... and then we went outside to learn how spray paints can also be used to add layers to your work ...

and then more drawing, doodling, painting ...

This was my second time learning from Jennifer and I tell ya, it all came together much more solidly this time around ... the drawing, doodling, and painting ... including the live model that we were able to draw in many different ways and then combine with doodling and painting.

Here I am with model Jennifer and our model Tracey.
For those of you who are interested, our model will be returning to Studio CRESCENDOh for short figure drawing workshops. A rare opportunity for those who want to practice drawing a live person in a safe, artistic environment. Stay tuned for that!

It was great fun to see everyone's art and I also left the weekend tired but with greater resolve to continue painting and to continue finding my artistic voice.

Many thanks to Jennifer, Tracey and all the students (some who didn't make it into this group picture) for a wonderful experience. Until next time. :)

Doodled Rocks with Washi Tape Tutorial DIY

Thought I'd show you what I've been making lately ... with rocks, washi tape, and a white gel pen. Doodled Rocks with WashiWashi is really the leader, as I just stick rocks with pieces of washi that I like and then react to the washi on the rocks with a white gel pen by adding little doodles and marks.

Doodled Rocks with Washi TapeFor the one below, I cut the thicker washi with the fun chevron patterin in half lengthwise and let the pattern in the tape guide the entire design.

Rock on. :)

Altered Anthropologie Catalog Art Journaling + Doodling Tutorial

I just about flipped out when the latest Anthropologie catalog arrived, didn't you? So, so beautifully styled and shot. I loved it so much and I felt that the cover and interior pages were just begging to be altered and turned into a journal. And that's exactly what I did. Here's how I embellished the cover.

Jenny DohThe cover really didn't need much to cover up but I wanted to cover the catalog name so I used some white gesso to do that.

altered anthropologie catalogThe paper frame that they used in this catalog is one that just opens up so much in terms of journaling possiblities so I ended up adding lyrics to one of my favorite songs in the middle of the frame and then added dit dots. I love how it looks like the frame is dimensional and popping off the page.

The apple in the photo inspired me to get one of my favorite stencils and add more red circles. And a bit of washi tape to balance things out.

stenciling tutorialAnd seeing all that red inspired me to add red to my earlier text and doodles.

I'm gonna use the entire catalog as a journal. Love it.

Crocheted, Doodled & Free Motion Stitched Brown Paper Bag Gift Tutorial

For me, the best part of getting a gift ready to give is packaging it in new and unique ways. Here's how I wrapped this gift for a friend.

Cello Doodle Carved Rubber Art Journal Tutorial

Check out my new cello rubber stamp that I carved. So cool, right?

Photo-9As you may know, I love to carve rubber without too much fuss. I just like to take my pen to the rubber and doodle what I want. No transferring, no fussing ... just going for it ... and embracing all the imperfections.

Photo-6
I did however practice doodling cellos first. Basically, a few scribbly vertical lines, then a two lines to make the cello's silhouette. Then nobs at the top and mirrored "f" shapes on the cello's body.

So once the rubber was carved, I inked it with a brown inkpad and stamped it onto a piece of German music paper. I used some black markers to outline it and add some doodles.

Photo-7I also used the eraser of a pencil to stamp dots and doodle more lines.
Photo-8I also added a paper cutout that I made from this tutorial. And then I attached it to an art journal page with black photo corners.

Doodled Boxing Gloves

I've been having great fun decorating my boxing gloves ...

Jenny Doh

With simple lines and dots ...

Jenny Doh

Jenny Doh... all made with permanent markers by Staedtler in red and black, a Uni Posca marker in white, and an extra-fine point micron (.003).

Jenny DohJust goes to show that you can't take the artist out of the boxer. :)

Lately, per the recommendation of my boxing coach, Terrance, I've moved from my 12 oz. pair to a heavier 14 oz. pair. I still use my first pair ... especially during class work. I'm looking forward to decorating my second pair as well ... because it makes boxing that much more fun.

Jenny DohHappy boxing.
Happy doodling.

Doodled Envelopes

I've been having fun doodling on envelopes. For this one, I started by stamping with an empty toilet paper roll and cream colored paint to make circles and then adding marks with a fine-point black markker.

doodled envelope
And then adding color with my trusty colored pencils. When adding color to kraft colored envelopes or paper, it's paint or colored pencils that work best. Colored markers really don't work.

These are the envelopes I use. They're from Staples. I buy them by the box. Love them so.

So much fun.

DIY Crochet Stamp Printmaking Tutorial

Check out my new stamp. Not made of rubber. It's made of crochet.

crochet stamp printmaking tutorial

I used hemp yarn to chain 12 and joined with a slip stitch and weaved in all the ends.

crochet tutorial
I used spray adhesive to mount it onto a piece of cardboard into the shape of a heart.

crochet printmaking tutorial

Using a sponge brush, I loaded the stamp with acrylic paint then stamped the image onto paper. To finish, I added washi tape, sheet music, and doodling.

Happy creating. :)

Funny Free Motion Doodle Art Quilt Tutorial

Isn't she adorable?

Jenny DohI started by free motion doodle quilting onto a layer of muslin, batting, muslin. I used my pen-to-paper doodles as inspiration. Check out JENNI. So funny, right? Every time someone asks me, "Are you Jenny with a Y or Jenni with an I?" I have this vision of this girl with an EYE named Jenni.

free motion doodle art quilt tutorialThe thing about free motion doodling is that it just comes with practice. I didn't sketch anything out before I started. I just started with the eyes, then the nose, then the mouth, then the rest of the face and hair and body ... much like a regular doodle. Just lower the feed dogs on your sewing machine, put your darning foot on and go for it. Remember that practice is the key.

free motion doodle art quilt tutorialNext, I took my watercolors and colored certain parts of the art quilt.

IMG_0961

IMG_0962Then I cut the stitched and colored character, and backed it with another layer of fabric, batting, fabric, and free motion quilted a frame with black thread. Then I free motion quilted the circles with white thread.
