Announcing My New Online Class :: How to Run an Art Studio + Gallery!

I am very excited to announce my new Instant Watch online class titled:

How to Run an Art Studio + Gallery!

The reason I created this class is because I receive frequent questions from people all over, on how I opened my art studio, Studio Crescendoh, and what I've been doing to keep it open for so many years.

So I have made 4 videos in which I answer the many frequently asked questions and demystify the process for you.

Once you enroll in the class, you will be emailed a password. You will use that password to access the class and be able to watch all four videos at once or at a pace that works for you.

You can enroll for this class by clicking here and then adding the item to your cart and completing the transaction.

Thank you, and welcome.

Jenny :-)

PS: If after the class you have additional questions very specific to your situation, I welcome the opportunity to consult with you individually by appointment.

Benjamin Bjorklund with Blake Neubert in the Studio

This is the painting that Benjamin Bjorklund painted during his live demonstration during his recent visit to Studio Crescendoh.

Bb2Here's a photo from the actual demo where everyone witnessed this painting come to life.

In addition to this demo, Benjamin, along with Blake Neubert provided a 3-day workshop where participants worked with pencil, charcoal, pastels, watercolors, and oils. Below are some photos that recap the workshop:

Here is a charcoal drawing demonstration that Blake Neubert did, along with the final drawing.

And here's the final painting that Benjamin did on the final day of the workshop, of his dog, Solomon.

Bb1Everyone had a wonderful time and it was an honor for Studio Crescendoh to host this workshop and demo experience. For those who have asked if they will return to the studio, the answer is YES! So please stay tuned for details of future studio experiences with Benjamin and Blake.

NEW Workshop! :: Oil Painting by Heart :: Magical Portraits

A couple important things I've learned about oil painting portraits:

  • I am not a camera. I am an artist. Which is why when I paint a portrait, it's the emotional ESSENCE that I capture, not the mechanically EXACT likeness.
  • Starting a portrait is half the battle of finishing a portrait. Which is why I spend lots of time prepping and planning the overall approach to create a framework that can be finished.

I am excited to be teaching my new workshop: Oil Painting by Heart :: Magical Portraits in Studio Crescendoh this November 28th and30th. The details and link to enroll can be found here.

Open Studio

This is an uninstructed live model open studio session where painters are welcome to practice painting while referencing a real live model.

Artists are to bring their own paints, substrates, brushes and other items needed for their work aside from the following, which the studio will provide:

  • Experienced model
  • Good lighting
  • Good music
  • Easels and trays
  • Chairs
  • Containers for water (for acrylic and watercolor artists)
  • Gamsol mineral spirits (for oil painters)

It's a time to peacefully enter the painting zone, and paint alongside just me or me and any others who join in. No formal instruction, just good lighting, good music and good company of other humans painting at all skill levels:

  • 1:30 PM: Arrive and settle
  • 2:00 PM: Live model first pose begins
  • 5:00 PM: Live model final pose ends

  • When the live model is posing for portrait work, the poses will likely be two 20 minute posesand five 25 minute poses with five 5-minute breaks in between each pose.
  • When the live model is posing for nude figurative work, the poses will likely be several short 2-minute poses, some longer short 7-minute poses, and a few long 20-minute poses.
  • Please prepare your substrates and supplies prior to the first pose so that you can get right to work with the first pose.
  • If you end up arriving late or leaving early, please enter/exit during one of the breaks.
  • There is no official programming after the session is over but there are lots of wonderful eateries around the studio for any artists who may spontaneously feel like enjoying a happy hour after the session. A good time to develop and enjoy friendships.
  • Once purchased, the spot for this open studio is transferable but payment is non-refundable. Please read about this policy in our Studio Policies.
  • Please remember that this session is UNINSTRUCTED. There will be no instructor and therefore no instruction given. It is just a time for you to practice your work referencing a live model experienced with short and long poses.

1: Loosen up. 2: Alter. 3: Integrate.

I've been hard at work getting my Artfully Altered workshop ready! It is a one-day workshop that will happen Saturday February 21st and/or Monday February 23rd. I like to offer my workshops once on a weekday and once on a weekend so people with assorted obligations can have a chance to take it. :)

Photo-63In the class, we will:

  • begin with quite innovative and outside the box exercises to get us to loosen up and consider new ways of seeing and creating
  • utilize approximately ten methods that I love to use to uniquely alter photos, and pages from catalogs and magazines
  • create a monster journal using file folders and papers into which we will integrate the altered works
  • discover ways to integrate altered works onto other substrates

Fun group has started to form. Enrollment is now open here. Join us if you want to. :)

A lot of work being done

I am extremely tired.
And it's much later than my usual bed time. And I'm writing a blog post.

After Amy's wonderful day of workshop today, I segued into opening my studio for Santa Ana's monthly Art Walk. Two of the best things I overheard during the art walk were as follows:

1. Two young girls pointing to works they liked in the studio to their dad, with one saying "I'd like to have that one hang in my bedroom."

Art connects and works with someone or it doesn't. And when my art connects with a tender young person who vocalizes the connection to her father ... well ... it's very special.

2. A cohort of young men viewing and talking amongst themselves about the art with one of them saying to the group: "There's a lot of work being done in this studio."

Yes. There is a lot of work being done. It felt so good to overhear a complete stranger validate the fact that making art, and all the other activities related to making art is work, and that I have been doing a lot of it.

Off to bed I go.
For another full day tomorrow.
Because art ... making it, facilitating it, discussing it, teaching it ... it is my work.
And even in this state of being tired, I am grateful that there is a lot of it being done in my studio.

Announcing :: Artfully Altered

I'm excited to announce my Artfully Altered workshop in Studio CRESCENDOh in February, 2015! A full-day class where I'll share prompts and methods on how to view photos and pages of catalogues and magazines with an artistic and playful point of view and then use that point of view to create alterations using my favorite methods.

After that, we will together discover how those altered photos and catalogue pages can be incorporated into art journals and other works of art that are fun, fresh, and unconventional.

The fun we will have. :)

Enrollment is now open here.
