Painting Tip 12 :: Pinky Coral (oils)

To mix a really beautiful pinky coral with oil paints, this is how I do it: Cad Red Medium (Utrecht), Caucasion Flesh Tone (Gamblin), and white (Windsor Newton). To make it lean less pink and more orange, I reduce the Cad Red and increase the Flesh.

Painting Tip 11 :: Viridian

I do own a tube of Viridian green and I squeeze it out when I know for sure I will be using it in my paintings. But sometimes, I don't want to squeeze it out onto my palette because I'm not sure if I'll be using it. And sometimes, I don't want to take that tube with me when I'm teaching in the studio. (And sometimes I can't find the tube when my studio is extra messy!) In all such instances I end up mixing what I think is a very close Viridian, which is Cad Yellow Lemon + Ultramarine Blue. You can see in the photo the Viridian from the tube on the right and the mixed version on the left. And then you can see both versions desaturated with a bit of white. Pretty darn close.

#jennydohtips :: Painting Tip 10

Black and yellow#jennydohtips
Painting Tip 10

To mix my favorite greens, I grab one of my yellows and ... nope, not blue, but black. Yep. Here's black mixed with (top to bottom) cad yellow lemon, cad yellow light, and yellow ochre. Then to the right of those greens I've added white to make yet another three less saturated greens. Black is actually red/yellow/blue all mixed together but the base of most modern black paints is blue, which is why when you add yellow, you get green. So ... no need to buy tubes of green gold or sap green or sage green, etcetera ... just black and a few yellows and white. Interestingly I rarely use black from a tube when I want a black. I mix my blacks. That will be another future tip.
