Bib-Style Doily Necklace by Melody M. Nunez

Bib-Style Doily Necklace
by Melody M. Nuñez

NecklaceHangingI made this necklace using a vintage doily from my art stash, in addition to a few other simple supplies.  You can use just about any size, shape, or color of doily for your base – whatever appeals to your sense of style.  The examples below show the doily bib embellished with new red buttons, vintage silver buttons, and white/rhinestone flowers harvested from costume jewelry earrings.  This project is very versatile and is easy to customize…

Materials
Doily
Electric iron
Silver ball and chain necklace with closure clasp
Embellishments (buttons, rhinestones, costume jewelry pieces)
Sewing needle
Thread to match the color of your doily
Adhesive, if you decide to glue your embellishments on instead of sewing them on

Before Instructions

  1. Decide which way your doily will hang on the necklace chain (if it’s not round).
  2. Iron the doily flat, then fold in half and iron again.  The chain will run underneath your fold when you hang it.
  3. Run the chain between the two sides of your doily, so the doily’s hanging from the ball and chain necklace.
  4. Stitch the two sides of the doily together in 6 or 7 places to keep it from shifting when wearing.  Keep your stitches small and match your thread exactly with the doily if you want these joined places to blend in.
  5. Attach your embellishments to the doily bib piece.  Consider sewing them on, or glue them on with hot glue.
