The Reality of Art • by Amanda Trought

Amanda TroughtI am an artist and have been working as a mixed-media artist for the past two years. I love using a wide range of materials in my work, and love experimenting with different techniques.

Art Helps with Dementia
I have also been doing some work with the elderly at a dementia care center. My mother has also been living with dementia for the past six years and I am her main caregiver. I have seen first hand how being involved with art programs help those with dementia in many ways, using different materials, themes and topics. The aim is to get them to share as many of their stories as possible and taking these memories and using them in an art piece.

Positive Impact
We started out with an hour session and they now can work for up to two hours, and their level of concentration increases, their mood, and interaction has also developed. With my mother I regularly encourage her to draw, paint and use different materials and have developed a Web site for her to display her work.

Amanda Trought lives in the United Kingdom. To learn more about Amanda, check out these sites:, Amanda may be reached by e-mail at
